Bob everything you write seems like you are reading my mind. Life gets harder as we all get older, but your suggestions are right on!!! Love reading that I am not crazy and that there are others like me. Thanks!! I enjoy the recipes (but you know Bill...if it's not a bacon cheese burger..forget it) He eats shrimp now but I have received the allergy police notice and can't touch any fish) I knew so long ago there was a reason we met along with the others. Remember my offer still goes. Thanks for all your hard work.
I thought it would be of interest to lots of people. As we get older, the possibility of falling is very real. I’m glad you found it helpful. Let me know if any of my suggestions really do work for you.
I'm so happy to see this--as someone with a history of stumbles/falls leading to interesting images on x-rays and a bum hip. I do weight training and try to remember balance exercises but I've also noticed that I've unconsciously changed habits. I've always moved/walked fast (hence all the stumbles/falls), now I keep reminding myself to slow down and scan the ground and uneven sidewalks for possible problems. That's a big one. I'm gripping the banister/handrail more and yelling at my husband to do the same. Stairs scare the hell out of me. Removed scattered rugs. Haven't worn heels in years; love my sneakers and flats. Your wonderfuly timely post has given me more help--plus a great recipe i'm going to try to make tonight!
I've been feeling quite low that despite my otherwise generally good health and best efforts, needing no meds for cholesterol or bp, weight training 2x pw with trainer, Pilates 2x pw, my balance has been off in the past year.
I've taken two hard falls outside. No breaks, just island-size bruise on my leg on first fall, bloodied nose and probable crack to cartilage upon second fall in Feb. I just don't feel steady on my feet and prefer to use the elliptical in my building's gym for cardio over walks outside, which feel too fraught.
My weight lifting has made my strength and muscle tone unusually good for my age (73) and Pilates has maintained my natural flexibility, but to fear walking outside is discouraging.
I presumed this unsteadiness was just be age and something I must accept. I never thought of my ears and left eye might be the cause.
I wear hearing aids and have TED (thyroid eye disease), left eye neuropathy and recently diagnosed with mild glaucoma. All of it in my left eye. Until I started wearing prism glasses for the diplopia, I wore an eye patch.
I've always had excellent balance until now and wonder if your suggested eye and balance exercises will help. I also wonder if I should return to the eye patch.
Ty! Great read
No, thank you!
